On September 16, 2001, I was scheduled to run the Philadelphia Half Marathon. I paid the registration fee, did my training, booked a hotel room and was looking forward to the event.

I like to run first thing in the morning, but on September 11, 2001, I didn't run. With the marathon five days away, I was scaling back my mileage and resting up for the race.  Everyone knows what happened next.

As the crow flies, our home sits 22 miles from the World Trade Center site. Like many others, I felt paralyzed. I did manage to complete the above drawing for a show benefiting victims of 9/11, but with uncertainty in the air I didn't want to travel away from my family. I didn't run the race.

This year, together with my son Andrew, I've been training to run that half marathon in Philadelphia. The run will be on November 18th and I will be running for the children of firefighters and other victims of 9/11. Please help me to help those that have lost so much by contributing to the Michael Lynch Memorial Foundation.

Drawing done to help the victims of 9/11

When you give people the freedom to pursue happiness, you have to take the good with the bad. A few will always push the boundaries of decency (see previous posts) but most people are good.

Lets celebrate that today.

I was fortunate to see Ray Charles sing this song live at the State Theater.
