Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg underwent surgery for pancreatic cancer yesterday. The 75 year old Supreme Court Justices was a Clinton appointment in 1993 and remains the only female on the high court.  The cancer was caught in it's early stages.

I grew up a Yankee fan, as was my dad before me, so it seems like I knew Bobby Murcer. He signed with the yanks in 1964, was called up in 65 to play shortstop, served in the military from 67-68, became a regular in 69 as an outfielder, was a five time All Star, had the second highest batting average in 1971 batting .331. a gold glove winner and fifth in MVP voting in 72. He was traded away to SF for Bobby Bonds and also played for the Cubs, but he returned to the yanks and played in the 1980 and 81 post seasons. He was the only player to play alongside Mickey Mantle and Don Mattingly. Upon retirment, he became a broadcaster in 83. He spent one year as Yankee assistant GM, but returned to the broadcast booth until he lost his battle with cancer this weekend. Somewhere in my attic I have a ball he signed for my son. He was a genuinely nice guy and it came across in his broadcasting. He was 62.

At 76 years old Ted Kennedy has an malignant tumor in the left parietal lobe of his brain. Although it can be treated , because it is aggressivly growing within the brain tissue and not matastasized, in almost all cases it is not curable. Members of both sides of the isle have come forward to praised the Senator for his abilities as a legislator.

As a rookie in 2006, Jon Lester won his first five major league starts pitching for the Boston Red Sox. He had a seven and two record when he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, a blood cancer that might have ended his career. Lester underwent four courses of chemotherapy, was pronounced cancer free, and went back to his normal life. Well,... in Jon's case, an exceptionally rare and gifted life. Medical breakthroughs in the treatment of cancer enabled Jon to continue pitching for the Boston Red Sox, appear in a World Series and yesterday he accomplished the greatest feat in baseball by pitching a no hitter.

I can't cure cancer and I certainly can't throw a no hitter for a major league team. Some may even argue the merits of my draftsmanship, but here's something that I am doing.
