The respected economist has been tapped to form a new government in Italy, but credentials aside, he's going to have a hard time. The country has a little over four months to repay or refinance over 200 billion euros in maturing bonds. While interest rates on those bonds have climbed to 7.4 percent, we know Jon Corzine won't be a buyer at that or any price.

Despite the mounting charges of prostitution and corruption, Berlusconi has remained in power largely due to the weakness of the opposition center left. But prosecutors hope to succeed in doing what politics did not, bring down the Italian Prime Minister. Tuesday they filed a request to skip preliminary hearings and move to an immediate trial.

Ball point pen on the morning newsprint

Bizarre that on December 15th 2008, one year ago to the day, the big story was about an Egyptian correspondent who stood at a George W Bush press conference in Iraq and yelled “This is your farewell kiss, you dog” before throwing two shoes at our president. (here are my corresponding doodles from one year ago today)

Today's news is about Massimo Tartaglia, who threw a souvenir statuette at Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. But unlike Bush, who dodged the incoming shoes, Berlusconi tragically took it square in the face breaking his nose and knocking out two teeth. To add insult to the prime minister's injuries, the mentally ill assaulter actually has supporters and a fan page on facebook....Bizarre

The Prime Minister of the Italian Republic, Silvio Berlusconi is hosting the G8 Summit. This doodle goes out to my son Andrew, who is studying abroad and today is probably baffled by all the traffic and congestion being he's in Rome, Italy along with eight of the most powerful men on the planet. Enjoy Capri this weekend Andrew!
