John Arthur Johnson became the first black Heavyweight Boxing Champion of the World in 1908. The controversial figure spawned the search for the "Great White Hope" to take the title away from Johnson in the ring, but it was the law that dealt the “Galveston Giant” his biggest blow. Johnson was convicted of violating the Mann Act for having a consensual relationship with a white woman across state lines. Now Senator John McCain and Representative Peter King are championing the champ by asking the first African American President to posthumously pardon the first African American Heavyweight Champion.

Looking back on 08, will the big story be: the election of the first African American President, the first woman Vice President, or the economic meltdown of our financial system? I'm betting on the latter.  Politics be damned, foreign policy debates be damned, James Carvel had it right, it's the economy stupid!

I'm for a womans right to choose, and the evangelical base of the republican party is a little off putting, but I've always liked the maverick, John McCain. I think that our country would have been infinitely better served had the Republicans embraced him eight years ago, but the party loyalists hated him. It all seems so insincere now that they're accepting him out of desperation, and unfair that he now be their standard bearer and suffer the slings and arrows from those rightfully upset with the incompetence of the previous administration. But McCain has proven to be a tough guy with a high tolerance for pain. Last night he tried to distance himself from President Bush... Is it too little too late? It should be interesting.
