UPDATE, Monday 4:18 pm:

This morning I was going by the New York Times version:

Mr. Van Duzer said that he got permission first. Speaking to reporters after, he said an agent “said I was all right as long as I didn’t take him away.”

But this afternoon I heard him interviewed and he denied that he got permission, saying it was spontaneous.
Some advice, if you're on a rope line, I wouldn't try it.
