Yesterday, November 18th, my son Andrew and I finished the 13.1 mile Philadelphia Half Marathon, crossing the finish line at the foot of the Philadelphia Museum of Art side by side with exact times of 2 hours, seven minutes and forty eight seconds. On September 16, 2001, I was scheduled to run the Philadelphia Half Marathon. I paid the registration fee, did my training, booked a hotel room and was looking forward to the event. I like to run first thing in the morning, but on September 11, 2001, I didn't run. With the marathon five days away, I was scaling back my mileage and resting up for the race.  Everyone knows what happened next. As the crow flies, our home sits 22 miles from the World Trade Center site. Like many others, I felt paralyzed. I did manage to complete the above drawing for a show benefiting victims of 9/11, but with uncertainty in the air I didn't want to travel away from my family. I didn't run the race. This year, together with my son Andrew, I've been training to run that half marathon in Philadelphia. The run will be on November 18th and I will be running for the children of firefighters and other victims ...
