Ball point pen on the morning newsprint
Frank McCourt passed away yesterday from complications of melanoma. He was born in Brooklyn, New York during the Great Depression and would return years later and become a New York City public school teacher. What happened in between was the horrific tale of his childhood and the basis for his Pulitzer Prize winning memoir, Angela's Ashes. He was 78.

Oh, I knew you'd do his portrait today. I was so saddened to hear this news today. I knew he was sick and in hospice, but I loved him...nice portrait of him, Larry!
Larry, God bless Frank McCourt. I met him at a reading after the publication of Angela's Ashes at Rutgers. He was a gracious, cordial, and genuine man. His writing moved me always. This is a moving portrait of him. Thanks, Pat
How fortunate for you to have met him Pat. Hard to believe that from his tragic beginning he somehow became the man you describe.
I too met Mr. McCourt at Kean University. What an interesting man and life. He signed his book for me....
