Ball point pen on today's newsprint
Recent studies have found that the death penalty is not a deterrent to homicide. I know we can argue the merits of that argument but in the mean time, many states still sentence murderers to death. I point this out to highlight the dichotomy between how we punish individuals compared to big corporations. The SEC believes having fraudulent Wall Street firms promise not to violate a law that they already promised not to break, without admitting guilt, to be a deterrent. When you stop laughing read this

<b>"Our goal is always to maximize the return to investors."</b> Ms. Shapiro is being very blunt. Here's my interpretation of that statement. "It is what it is. This is how the system works and in the end, <i>some investors</i> will get their money back."
